The worst thing for your carpets is oil dirt and sand. Even a clean pair of shoes will track particles onto the carpet. There's no point in begging the landlord to change the carpets because unless they are totally shot chances are you won't get your wish. And even if you were willing to change them yourself your landlord might not approve but you'll get no arguments about putting down an area rug. In fact you don't even need permission.
