Rug placement most probably is one of the factors that you might want to consider first in selecting a rug. It is important to know where the rug is going to be placed. As you consider the placement of the rug, the other factors will follow: such as color, materials and size.
Rug composition. Rugs are made of many different materials. Many of them today, thanks to the development of synthetic fibers are inexpensive to own. Cheap area rugs can be used in spaces where there is much more traffic and where the rug may need to be replaced occasionally. Cheap area rugs do not need to look cheap. The man made materials often have more variety than more expensive Persian rugs. Persian rugs are known for their beauty and durability, but may be beyond the budget of many homeowners. Discount rugs are often made of synthetic fiber which repels water better than Persian rugs so may be more appropriate as kitchen rugs or bathroom rugs.
Room-Size Rugs. When choosing room-size rugs, a good rule of thumb is to measure the room and ensure there will be approximately 18 to 24 inches of space between the rug and the wall on each side. This will help you achieve a balanced look that is not crowded or overbearing. If you are using the rug to cover a hardwood floor, this also allows some of the beauty and sheen of the base flooring to add a touch of elegance to the room by providing your guests with a glimpse of the wood around the borders of the space.
