Room-Size Rugs. When choosing room-size rugs, a good rule of thumb is to measure the room and ensure there will be approximately 18 to 24 inches of space between the rug and the wall on each side. This will help you achieve a balanced look that is not crowded or overbearing. If you are using the rug to cover a hardwood floor, this also allows some of the beauty and sheen of the base flooring to add a touch of elegance to the room by providing your guests with a glimpse of the wood around the borders of the space.
Area rugs. A rug can define an area within a larger space, for example area rugs in a living room may make a conversation piece when surrounded by a seating arrangement of couches and chairs. Another small area rug could be placed in an area for television watching or for listening to music. Sometimes people will use an area rug beneath a dining room table to enhance the beauty of the furniture as well as to further anchor the space. A more "country" type décor will often use a braided rug to go with western style furniture, while an oriental rug is usually thought of in a more formal designed room.
Here you will find some generally accepted guidelines for selecting an area rug that will fit your space well and perfectly accent your living area, but do keep in mind that personal preferences should trump any type of rules put forth by the rug industry or interior designers.
